Rebel Talk: The Echo
There are moments in life that feel big. Graduation. Marriage. The birth of a child. Buying a home. Starting a business. Divorce. We naturally assume those are the moments that shape our future.
But I've come to believe our lives aren't built by the biggest moments.
They're built by the echoes.
An echo doesn't happen all at once. It starts with a single sound, a single action, a single decision. Then it carries farther than we ever imagined. Most of us spend our lives evaluating decisions based on what happens immediately afterward, when the truth is that the most important decisions are the ones whose impact won't be fully realized for years.
Lately, I've been spending a lot of time on the land where we'll eventually build our home. When I first walked the property, it wasn't picturesque. It was overgrown. Hundreds of trees. Thick weeds. Brush everywhere. It didn't look like the place where my family would one day gather around a fire, where grandchildren might someday fish in the ponds, or where memories would be made for decades to come.
It was just dirt.
Now, after months of clearing trees, moving logs, running equipment, building roads, and shaping the land, it's beginning to look different. But the truth is, none of this started with a skid steer. None of it started with construction plans.
It started with one decision.
Buy the land.
That decision is still echoing.
Every weekend I spend out there. Every tree that's cleared. Every load of gravel that's hauled. Every conversation about house plans. Every dream becoming a little more real. They're all echoes of one choice made months ago.
The same has been true throughout my life.
Learning to fly wasn't just about earning a pilot certificate. It opened doors to friendships, adventures, confidence, and experiences I never could have predicted. Starting Relentless Rebel wasn't just about selling apparel. It became a community, a mission, and an opportunity to encourage people I may never meet. Every meaningful chapter of my life can be traced back to a single decision that kept echoing long after the moment itself had passed.
But here's the part we often forget.
Bad decisions echo too.
The workout you skip today makes it easier to skip tomorrow.
The difficult conversation you avoid doesn't disappear—it grows louder.
The promise you break to yourself slowly changes the way you see yourself.
One excuse becomes a habit. One habit becomes your character. And character eventually becomes your life.
Everything echoes.
That's why I think we place too much emphasis on finding the "life-changing opportunity." We wait for some massive breakthrough that will suddenly transform everything, when in reality our futures are usually shaped by ordinary decisions repeated consistently over time.
One phone call.
One workout.
One book.
One apology.
One hour spent with your kids.
One step toward a dream you've been putting off.
None of those feel monumental in the moment.
But they echo.
Years from now, you'll likely look back at your life and realize it wasn't built in the dramatic moments everyone noticed. It was built in the quiet decisions no one applauded. The ones that kept carrying forward, day after day, year after year, until they became the life you now live.
So today, before you make your next decision, ask yourself one simple question.
What kind of echo am I creating?
Because long after today is forgotten, the echo of your choices will still be shaping the person you become.
