Rebel Wired: Someday Never Comes

Rebel Wired: Someday Never Comes

The secret to unlocking future success lies in the actions you take today.

Every now and then, a song catches the essence of a universal truth so precisely it feels almost prophetic. As many of you know, I've been learning to play the guitar. This month marks my 1 year mark. I've picked up quite a few Creedence Clearwater Revival songs. We've all experienced (and are a little freaked out) by social media hitting you with ads for something you may have only talked about. Well, my phone must have been hearing me practice the guitar and deiced to add Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Someday Never Comes” to my playlist. I'm glad it did. This song is a poignant reminder of a lesson many of us learn the hard way: the future we often wait for—the "someday" filled with dreams and opportunities—never really arrives unless we take decisive action to bring it forth.

Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there. That moment you tell yourself, "I'll start that business someday," or "I'll write my book when I have more time." It sounds reasonable, right? Yet, the more we repeat these phrases, the more these somedays stack up like books on a dusty shelf, untouched and unread.

The Trap of 'Someday'

The concept of ‘someday’ is a treacherous trap. It’s the perfect excuse, the ultimate procrastination. It gives us permission to wait for a perfect moment that, in reality, never comes. I know this all too well. There was a time when I envisioned myself as a writer, dreaming of the day I’d finally start typing out the stories swirling in my head. But that ‘right time’? It never showed up—not until I stopped waiting and started doing.

Lessons from a Classic Tune

"Someday Never Comes" tells a narrative of lessons passed from father to son, each generation waiting for a revelation in the future that only arrives through the hard experiences of the present. This echoes a truth many of us face: life’s crucial lessons and opportunities for growth often come from the actions we take today, not the plans we defer for tomorrow.

Taking Action Now

The idea of taking action can be daunting, especially when it’s about something as significant as our dreams. However, I've found breaking this down into manageable steps can make it more attainable: Let's do that together now and use this to get off your ass and make someday today.

1. **Define Your Dream**: Start by defining what you actually want. What does your dream look like? Be as specific as possible.

2. **Set Immediate Goals**: What can you do today? Not tomorrow, not next week. Today. It could be as simple as writing a paragraph of your book, researching for your business plan, or sketching designs for a new product.

3. **Build Consistency**: Progress is about consistency, not intensity. Devote a small segment of your day towards your goal. Even 15 minutes daily adds up and keeps your dream vivid in your daily life.

4. **Seek Support**: Share your ambitions with friends, family, or a mentor. Support networks hold us accountable and provide encouragement through ups and downs.

5. **Reflect and Adapt**: Regularly reflect on your progress and be open to adapting your approach. Each step forward, even the missteps, is a part of your growth.

Embrace Resilience

Remember, every moment spent waiting for the perfect start is a moment lost. The path to any dream is fraught with challenges and setbacks. Embracing resilience means seeing these challenges as essential to your journey. Each setback is not a signal to give up but a chance to learn, adapt, and push forward with even more determination.

Let's wrap it up: Why Wait?

Why wait for a sign, or for the perfect conditions? "Someday Never Comes" shouldn’t just be a refrain from a beloved song; let it be a wake-up call. A call to action that ignites a fire within to chase after what you want, starting now.

In every melody of life, let your actions sing. Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can. After all, the only perfect time to start is now. Promise me this now, you aren't going to wait for someday because, as the song teaches us, someday never truly comes.
